SIREN: an interview with Manchester’s up-and-coming, all-female indie band
2017 is over, and it’s time for an update: a playlist update. Manchester-based three-piece SIREN – compromising of Kate (vocals and guitar), Ella (guitar) and Katie (drums), are just what you need to get through those January blues.
The three-piece combine moody riffs and alt-rock/indie pop vibes with Kate’s unique, enthralling voice. The band talked to us about influences, going international and intentions for 2018.
Interesting choice for a band name, why SIREN?
Kate: One morning I’d written a song and titled it SIREN and that song alone is what made me get in touch with the girls and say we have to start a band and play this on a stage. The song was such a massively important part of us coming together and playing, so calling ourselves SIREN just felt right!
Katie: Also, I’m Greek, and the Sirens in Greek mythology are women who lure men in with enchanting music. So it seemed like the name was meant for us!
For people who haven’t heard your music yet (and everyone should), how would you guys describe your style?
Katie: I’d say we’re pretty dark!
Kate: Yeah, we go for the eerie vibes, and I love my lyrics to kinda slap people in the face, you know? I think it’s hard to put our sound into a box.
Ella: Yeah we just do everything our way, it’s a case of following whatever we vibe with.
Who’s your biggest influences?
Ella: Women like Joan Jett/The Runaways are a massive influence on me personally. They’re such powerhouses in rock music.
Kate: Yeah! Bands like Deap Vally, I live for. Alex Turner is a huge influence for me as the frontwoman, so I think our music/vibe resembles those vibes a lot.
You guys are all from different places (Kate’s from Liverpool, Ella’s from Switzerland and Katie’s from Greece), would you consider taking SIREN to these places in the future?
Katie: Yes, 100%. We already have plans to play a festival in Greece during the summer!
Kate: Yeah I want to take SIREN to every place that’ll have us!
Ella: We have great connections with agents in Switzerland too, so plenty of gigs will be on the way hopefully!
What’s your favourite song to perform and why?
Kate: My favourite song to perform is Siren, it never loses that same insane feeling it had when I first sent it to the girls. It’s definitely our special song.
Ella: I love playing Alana. Every crowd we’ve played in front of usually reacts so well to it. Such a good buzz.
Katie: Would You is mine. It gets better and better every time we play it I swear.
And your least favourite?
Kate: My least favourite is usually whatever song is ending our set because it means we have to leave the stage!
Ella: Yeah, what she said.
Katie: Haha, I have to agree.
How does it feel to be a girl-band in an arguably male-dominated field?
Kate: I LOVE IT, and I hope more girls see that it’s doable to just pick up a guitar and go and do it yourself. For me I felt like creating an all-female band was a must. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s like a silent political statement I’m trying to make.
Ella: It’s so empowering, it somehow seems more fun? Girls are just cool.
Katie: It’s a massive part of our identity, we really want the fact that we’re an all-female band in a male-dominated field to scream out. It’s fierce, and I’m super proud of it.
How do you prepare for a gig?
Ella: Get really, really, REALLY drunk!
Kate: Ella, don’t give all our secrets away dude??
Katie: We’re usually pretty chill before gigs. It’s more exciting than anything.
Ella: Yeah, because we’re drunk!
What advice would you give other students who want to make it in the music industry?
Kate: Don’t think about it, just do it. It’s such a cliche, but the only thing in the way of it is yourself.
Katie: Just find your thing and run with it.
Ella: And find cool people to share it with
Kate: Wow, look at us giving advice like real mature humans?
Who’d have thought?
What’s next for SIREN in 2018?
Kate: Gigs, gigs, gigs!
Ella: Recording, recording, recording!
Katie: Girl power, girl power, girl power!
