Does it matter what you graduate with?

Over the past few decades, the number of students receiving a 1:1 has doubled and 2:2s are becoming increasingly rare. Receiving a 2:1 is now the most common university result – but does this mean that employers no longer see 1:1s and 2:1s to be as prestigious as they once were? You’ll often see employers offering a 2:1 cut off when hiring graduates, but if so many of us are expected to receive this result, does this just make breaking into the job market even more difficult? Does it matter what you graduate with?

Perhaps it isn’t the grade you obtain at the end of uni that is important anymore, but just having a degree itself will give you an advantage in the job market. Most employers claim they aren’t particularly interested in which degree you have (unless it’s necessary for the job) just as long as you meet the 2:1 minimum requirement.

Experience counts for a lot of your employability and these days part-time jobs, foundation degrees and industry placements are always great avenues to pursue so that you don’t rely on your grade when you finish uni.

However, if unis decided to start giving out fewer top grades to students all over the country, isn’t this unfair on those who deserve it? Furthermore, how would employers then know how to judge whether one student’s 2:1 from one year is of less value than someone’s 2:2 from another year?

It is hard enough for us students to get into the job market as it is, without having the validity of our grades scrutinised and the added stress that we might not get the result we were expecting in a university’s attempt to make the top grades more valuable again.
