4 tips on applying for a Master’s
Applying for a Master’s course can be daunting, especially as they’re completely different from undergrad degrees. Here are 4 tips on applying for a Masters to minimise the stress when it all gets a bit too much.
What course do you want to do? You may have found your niche already – but if you haven’t, don’t panic. Research Masters courses with an open mind – start by looking at any unis that take your fancy, and have a scroll through their different departments and faculties until something catches your eye. Maybe you want to give Oxbridge a go? Or you just want to stay put where you are? Whatever you’re feeling – have a Google to get things clearer in your mind.
2. Start early
It’s never too early to start looking into things. You may find you need to submit a transcript, a research proposal, or get references, and it’s good to allow extra time to sort things like that out, as you never know how long the process will take. Plus, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. It’s better to spread your application out across a few months than cram it all into a week – or a day!
3. Talk to your tutors
Feeling a bit lost? Talk to people! Your tutors will be your first port of call with all things Masters-related. Maybe you need to approach them about writing you a reference, or maybe you really need to sit down and discuss the whole process with them. Maybe you want to set up a mock interview with them. Whatever it is, however much or little you need them – make contact and establish a relationship with them as early as possible.
4. Don’t panic
Applying for a Masters can be overwhelming, and it’s easy to panic when you’re doing something as important as this, but it’s important not to. When you’re worried, try to focus on what it is specifically that’s bothering you, and take the steps needed to get over that. Usually, that means talking to someone about it. Whether you’re emailing a tutor or crying to a friend – don’t bottle things up! Just keep calm and keep in mind that it’ll all be over soon.
