Edinburgh's cosiest coffee shops to study in this winter

The nights are getting darker, and the clocks have gone back, which can make it increasingly hard to leave your flat and head out anywhere. Instead of dragging yourself to the bright, distracting uni library each time, why not make studying a little less painful and head to a coffee shop? It'll be a lot easier to make yourself go if you'll be in a comfortable place, surrounded by fairy lights and cakes - and Edinburgh certainly isn't short of them.

Here are four of the cosiest coffee shops to study in this winter in Edinburgh.

Lovecrumbs, 155 West Port

This is arguably the best on the list for having a great Instagram, which is full of aesthetically-pleasing cake pictures - if you don't already follow them, I highly recommend that you do. Lovecrumbs is not only a rustic dream, with a Pinterest-worthy window seat to sit in, but they offer above-average cakes from partner CREAMED Edinburgh. Flavours include spiced orange, bramble and poppyseed, and raspberry and rose. The vibe inside is very chilled, and you don't feel rushed to leave at all.

Artisan Roast, 57 Broughton Street

Artisan Roast is a gem of a find for studying in due to their cosy area hidden at the back of the shop. Often this is full as it's so popular, but if you're lucky enough to find a seat, it's worth it! The laid-back and friendly staff definitely know what they're doing when it comes to coffee, being speciality coffee roasters, and they have their very own coffee beans to buy. They offer loads of different hot chocolate flavours, too, such as lavender, and white chocolate, and spiced variations such as chilli, as well as a yummy selection of baking.

Fortitude, 3C York Place

A little brighter and more modern looking, Fortitude is a great place to get a coffee and stick your head down. From a Thursday - Sunday, they sell the most amazing doughnuts from Twelve Triangles (check them out on Instagram for mouth-watering inspiration to go) - the perfect sugar rush for a weekend of studies. They also have some delicious brain power food such as homemade chilli and nachos, and cakes from CREAMED Edinburgh, too.

Fredericks Coffee House, 30 Frederick Street

Easy to miss on Frederick Street, Fredericks Coffee House is tucked away up some stairs off of the street and is ideal for studying in, with highly comfortable seating and a scrumptious array of food and drinks to keep you going. You don't feel rushed at all to leave, making for a super relaxed study environment. If you don't find it too distracting, seats near the window are perfect for when you want to take a break and people-watch over George Street.
