Free stuff to do in Birmingham this week: 4 Dec - 10 Dec
Here are all of the free events taking place in Birmingham this week.
Channel your inner Rapunzel and at last see the light (yes, that's a Tangled reference - there's nothing wrong with being a 20-year-old Disnerd in 2017) by taking part in a make-your-own lantern workshop this Christmas. In preparation for the Festival of Light on 17 December, a professional craft team are on hand to help you to create the perfect lantern. Take advantage of their expertise and try something a little bit more adventurous than your average pyramid. Ignore anyone who tells you that you won't be releasing a Santa-shaped lantern into the open sky this year - you don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
When? 10 am and 1 pm, 9 - 10 December.
Where? Parkside, Market Street, Bromsgrove, B61 8DA.
Gather a group together and head to the Gunmakers Arms this week for a night filled with festive fiction and alcohol-infused merriment! Take your pick from the selection of ales and other drinks on offer at the bar, and settle in for the evening alongside local writers Rachel New, Guy Etchells, David Wake, Ali Elsey, Andy Conway, Ray Bradnock, Andrew Sparke and Elaine Christie. Listen as they share with you excerpts from their works, and if you like what you hear, you can even purchase a book (or two) of theirs at the end of the night - the perfect gift for a loved one or even yourself this Christmas. Make sure to book a seat in advance as places are expected to fill up quickly.
When? 7 - 9 pm, 4 December.
Where? Gunmakers Arms, 93 Bath Street, B46HG.
Open Mic Night
Embrace your inner Whitney this week and come along to the Open Mic Night at the Ivy Leaf club. Everyone is welcome, no matter what your music taste - though you can probably expect renditions of 'All I Want for Christmas is You' to be in abundance this time of year. Should you need it, The Ivy Boys band are on hand to help you out with the backing vocals, but equipment isn't provided, so ensure you bring your own instruments if acapella isn't your thing.
When? 9 pm, 7 December.
Where? Ivy Leaf, 2296 Coventry Road, B263JR.
Mosley on the Move
Mosey on down to Mosley on the Move this week and check out the array of creative products on offer. Designers and artists from Birmingham and beyond will be taking advantage of the popular street market to showcase their best artistic goods this festive season. Treat yourself to some handmade jewellery, a painting, some ceramics, or even a sculpture - it's Christmas after all.
When? 9 am, 8 December.
Where? Colmore Row, B3.
Christmas on Campus
Complete with winter waltzers, a Ferris wheel, and even a giant snowglobe, UoB's one-day-only-wonderland is bound to impress. Enjoy performances from the Accapella Society and the Community Brass Band, browse the craft stalls, and maybe even indulge in a seasonal sweet treat. The festivities aren't exclusive to students of the uni - everyone is invited. So come along and celebrate with your local community. UoB is even opening its doors to Santa Clause himself, so be sure to pop into his Grotto and say hello!
When? 12 - 9 pm, 4 December.
Where? University of Birmingham, B152TT.
