5 things free to do in Moscow
Although not known as a cheap destination, there are plenty of great things to do for free in Moscow. The Russian capital is chock-full of budget-friendly activities and sights, but here are our top picks for things to do without spending a penny.
Go ice-skating on Chistye Prudy
The naturally-formed public ice-skating rink is located smack bang in the centre of the city and is pretty damn charming. Fairy lights strung around the rink and surrounding trees add a magical ambience, and the sharp cold winter of Russia will have you itching to warm up on the rink. Just remember that there is no rental service, so you’ll have to bring your own skates (or rent a pair nearby).
Catch a free concert
Not only is Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory one of the top higher music education institutions in the country, but it also doubles as a concert venue for world famous musicians and composers. If you’re a fan of classical music, or just want to soak up some culture, the Conservatory is a must. Just make sure you check the programme in advance to find out which concerts you can watch for free.
Spend an afternoon at Red October
It used to be a factory churning out chocolates and other sweet treats, but these days the famous Red October has been converted into Moscow’s coolest art spot. With plenty of art galleries and even a few fashion boutiques to browse, it’s the perfect place to spend a cultural afternoon – free of charge!
Witness the changing of the guard
Head over to Alexander Garden for a stroll amongst the flower beds, a beautiful fountain and – best of all – the historic changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb is a war memorial, dedicated to the Soviet soldiers killed during World War 2. The ceremony is performed several times a day, so you don’t need to plan your entire day around it.
Free walking tour
And, finally, what better way to see the top sights in Moscow than by foot? The Moscow Free Tour company offers a free walking tour of the major city sights, all led by experienced guides with a huge knowledge of Moscow – so don’t be afraid to pick their brains a little. You’ll see everything from Red Square, to Saint Basil’s Cathedral, so be sure to bring a camera!
