Social Media Safety

I know you have all heard this a million times before, but I thought it was an important topic to bring up. Also these are some little tips that have helped me to keep myself safe while being online. I appologise if I sound like a parent.

Social Media is a fun way to interact with people all over your country and the world. Social media also allows you to stay in contact with friends who are away, either traveling or away studying. Social media also allows you to share photographs of you and friends having a good time together, or pictures from holidays and days out. However it is important to remember that social media can also be dangerous, if you are not careful.

Here are some tips that have helped me to keep safe, while using social media platforms.

Never Give Out Personal Details

It is important that while you are talking to people on social media, then you must never give any personal details. You do not know these people and you do not know whether they are who you say they.

Personal details that you should not consider giving to strangers online are:

  • Phone Numbers.
  • Home Address.
  • Private Emails.
  • Other Social media accounts.

If a stranger ever asks for any of these details, then say no, no matter how kind they may seem.

Be Careful about Friend Requests

On some social media accounts always accept friend requests from people you know. This is more for social media sites, such as Facebook and Snap Chat. Campus Society is a little different as we are all trying to get to know people from different universitys and different parts of the country and world.

However for private social media accounts it is best sticking with just friends and family. If you recieve a friend request from someone you do not know, then decline the friend request. If they carry on persisting then either block or report them.

Blocking People

If you have a user who is harassing, threatening or bullying you in anyway. Then you should block and report them. If you recieve messages that are of a sexual nature and you feel uncomfortable, then report them and block them. If you have a user who is leaving mean comments under your posts, then please report and block them. You as a person and human being do not need to put up with anything that upsets or offends you.

Always Trust Your Gut Instinct

It is important that you trust your gut instinct because it will help to keep you safe. If you are recieving messages from another user and they are making you feel uncomfortable, then listen to your instincts. Stop messaging the previous user. If the user carries on messaging you, then report and block them. If someone is making you feel uncomfortable, then go with that feeling and make yourself safe.

Okay.....I do not want any of you to not use social media. Of course use it, as it is great fun and it is the best way to stay in touch with family and friends. I only want to make sure that you keep in mind some of the following tips to help keep you safe, while talking to strangers online.
