Five things free in Sao Paulo
It may be Brazil’s financial capital, but there are plenty of fun things to do for free in Sao Paulo. From museums to theatre tours, there’s enough to keep you entertained without spending a penny! Here are our top picks:
Guided tour of Theatro Municipal
It’s inspired by the stunning Palais Garnier opera house in Paris, and it shows. This building is one of the most beautiful architectural delights in the city, loved by locals and tourists alike for its many events. There’s a free guided tour in English held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 am and 5 pm, as well as Saturdays and holidays at 12 pm. You can grab your free tix at 10 am every day, but if you’re in the city for a few days you should try and book in advance.
Head to Sao Paulo Museum of Art
Located on Paulista Avenue, the art museum building is a landmark in itself, with suspended glass and vibrant red blocks making it a true photo op. Inside, there are plenty of temporary exhibitions housing artwork from all over the world, with enough to keep you occupied for a cultural afternoon. If you head over on a Tuesday, you can get free admission from 10 am to 6 pm.
Wander the old town with a free tour
Although Brazil is a relatively young country, the old town of Sao Paulo dates back to the 16th century, and it’s full of stunning sights. There’s the Republic Square, Municipal Library, the Cha Bridge, the Municipal Theatre and the Consolacao Church. You can even get a free tour on Republic Square – many companies are in the area offering tours on a tip basis.
Embrace Brazil’s history at the Immigration Museum
Fancy learning more about Brazilian diversity? Free on Saturdays, the Immigration Museum is in one of the best parts of the city – Mooca. The museum itself preserves the memories of immigrants, helping visitors learn and think more about Brazilian diversity and immigration. There are both permanent and temporary exhibitions, so there’s something to see all times of the day.
Get your fill of art at Pinacoteca
If the Museum of Art wasn’t enough for you, head over to the Pinacoteca on Saturdays for free entry into the cultural hotspot. It’s highly regarded as one of the most important museums in the city, and possibly even Brazil itself. It’s surrounded by a park, right in the city centre, so it’s well worth a visit. If you’re here on a warm day, take a picnic to the park afterwards to make the most of it.
