Freshers Week - advice from an Awkward Fresher

Starting university is scary time, for all newbies. It's a time of change and transition, which terrifies most people.
For me, freshers week was particularly difficult - I had a lot of boyfriend issues and crappy things to deal with, on top of going out and getting drunk every night with new people, it was kinda crazy.
Here are my top three tips:

1. Keep in touch with your family and friends back home... I know that seems like such an obvious thing and i'm sure most of you will be thinking 'of course I will', but you forget sometimes. You'll be extremely busy, but don't forget that the people who care most are sat at home probably worrying about you a little, so keep them informed. Obviously you're allowed your newly formed independence (that's what uni is all about!), but it's always good to have extra support during freshers week.

2. Don't be afraid to open up straight away

...Something I failed to do was tell my flat mates my opinions on things, and open up to them! Whether it be little things like which club I wanted to go to that night, or more serious things like how I felt about being so...alone, without my boyfriend. I wasn't alone because I had started living in a flat with 10 other people, but I felt lonely sometimes. I sat in my room a lot, and I wish I hadn't. Because I missed out on a few good nights with my flat mates. So don't feel like you can't be yourself, throw yourself into it, make friends and let them know what you're like from the get go - if you're living with them for a year, maybe even more, you just cannot be false or shy!

3. Go to lectures. Go.

Depending on how much of a party animal you are, freshers week can be so draining, you may not feel up for lecturers going on with themselves. If you're truly sick, don't force yourself. But if you can go, for an hour or two, do it because in the first few weeks you receive your introduction seminars, that kind of thing - where you meet new people and learn more about your course and how you can get the most out of it.

Don't let me put you off freshers!! Overall I had one of the craziest weeks of my life, but it was worth it and i'm so happy that I experienced it.

This week will be one of your most memorable, make the most of it and don't regret any of it.
