5 things free in Boston
Fancy a trip to Beantown? Well, now you can, with more free activities and sights to see than ever. Here are our top picks…
Sam Adams Brewery tour
The brand may be a big name in the beer world these days, but they haven’t forgotten their Boston roots. To pay homage to its humble beginnings, the brewery offers free tours to the public, so you can see first-hand how the good stuff is made. Tickets are given on a first-come-first-served basis, so head over early to ensure your spot on the tour.
They’ve been running for more than 20 years, so you’re pretty much guaranteed to enjoy the company’s free walking tours. Led by knowledgeable professionals, the tours span different themes and locations, taking you all over the city’s historic streets and suburbs. A particularly cool tour is the Boston Little Lanes tour, taking you through all of Boston’s hidden passageways which, by the end, will have you navigating the city like a local.
Boston Public Library
It was the first of its kind in the US, and the Boston Public Library still retains a certain uniqueness. The grand building is home to over 6 million books, as well as a series of sculptures and paintings – enough to keep anyone busy for a few hours! If the weather is clear, be sure to check out the newly-renovated courtyard for a spot of serenity.
Considered by many to be the best way to see Boston, the Freedom Trail is famous nationwide. Starting at the Boston Common, the trail offers some serious insight into the city and its history, weaving through and highlighting the key spots. The trail is easy to spot by a red line that snakes through the neighbourhoods. You can get a guide to help you along your way for a price, but the best way to explore the trail is solo.
The Hatch Shell
Best known as Boston’s epicentre for cultural events and performances, the Hatch Shell hosts musicians all year round. From classical to jazz, and rock and roll to the blues, there’s something for everyone at the Shell. Best of all is the annual Fourth of July Spectacular, where the Boston Pops take to the stage before a dazzling firework display over the Charles River. Check online for a full listing of the week's free events.
